I contacted 2 local shops, firestone, and pep boys. All of them wanting anywhere from $100-80 to mount and balance some all seasons on 15" wheels. For shits and giggles I called the Toyota Dealer... Their price? $60.

YEP. After calling around to see who could give me the best price on mounting and balancing 4 tires without tire pressure monitoring, the best price came from my local Toyota dealer.

Kinja'd!!!

Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.

My local Ford dealer is one of the cheapest oil changes in town ($32 with filter and 5 quarts), almost as cheap as Jiffy Lube and they use the recommended Motorcraft (Ford) semi-synthetic for no extra charge in Eco-Boost engines

We own a shop but let Toyota take care of the warranty stuff. Oh lord my dad has taken it back 3x just to get it fixed. Toyota of Cool Springs is a cesspool of awfulness.

Dealerships often have tire sales events. Might want to check-in with them next time you need some.

I had a dealership experience last week that has essentially blacklisted the small shop I’ve used multiple times before.

I knew the wife’s van needed struts up front. I took it to the small shop (named withheld) that I’ve used multiple times. The mechanic came back with what I was expecting, front struts and bushings. His estimate was high. Real high. I double checked with him on what he planned on doing. Yup, struts and bushings, way too much money in my mind.

Just for a sanity check, I set up an appointment with the local dealership (quick and easy online) for an estimate. They came back saying the same thing, front struts and bushings. Their estimate? Half what the small shop quoted me.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

At a dealership, using OEM parts and $115 an hour techs. I couldn’t believe it. Needless to say, I won’t be back to the small shop ever again. The dealer fixed my hard to reach rattling heat shield, too. No charge. But I’m still going to hunt around for a replacement small shop.

This is actually very, very common. Dealerships know they are in competition with other repairers for stuff like tires and maintenance interval services. Many of them have adjusted their pricing to be very competitive as a result. Also, they are using menu pricing for these services that drive the labor portion of the RO well below posted door rates - mostly because they use lesser experienced “Quick Service” techs who are paid hourly, rather than their journeyman flat rate guys with a lot of experience.

Jiffy lube oil change for my caddy? $112.

Dealership oil change? $35

Sounds like an oil change on a Fiat 500.

Parts: $45.
Labor: 1.5-2 hours.

Dealer price: $29.99.

It’s a no-brainer. (And no joke, that oil change is a pain in the arse. Requires a 12" socket extension, a 27mm socket, you have to remove the engine cover and air intake hose, and drop the entire belly pan. Hell to the no not ever again.)

I had a local shop charge me $100 for my Abarth, plus they needed the car for eight hours. Never again.

They’ll also take better care of your wheels. I got tired of discount tire techs marking up the wheels by letting the socket fly around (when removing the lugnuts with the air gun). I get my tires at the dealer now for about $20 more mounted/balanced.

The only problem is the dealer uses tires and oil changes to get you in the door. Then they can find other things that “need attention”. I watched one service advisor try to sell every single person assigned to him an alignment last time I was there.

In my previous life, I had a CTS. It was cheaper to bring it to the Caddy dealership to get the oil changed then to do it myself or bring it anywhere else. They were even cheaper than the quicky lube places. Plus they had fresh doughnuts AND fresh coffee. Thankfully, I never had to take it there for anything else. Had a weird noise coming from the rear, either a joint on one or both axels went bad, or bearings or something that moves back there. Ordered some axels and got some other parts, took the rear end apart, checked everything on both sides (it was the bearings), replaced the whole hub assembly on the right, did the rear breaks, put it all back together, sent back the unused axels. Saved a shit-ton of money and got it all done in an afternoon. Can't imagine how much they would have charged for that or how long it would take them. But oil changes? Every time to the dealership.

At the Ford dealer where I work, we use Motorcraft Semi Synthetic in all oil changes unless the vehicle requires full synthetic, which isn’t very common.

Lol, yeah I’m sure they’ll say something else needs fixing, although I know there’s a slight leak on my timing chain cover. I recently had my airbag replaced by them for the Takata crap.

Although it may be slightly cheaper for me to have oil changes done by someone I still do it myself. Mainly because I always use full synthetic and most shops want $60-80 dollars for a full synthetic oil change. Plus I like to choose what goes in it, but obviously I can’t mount and balance tires myself.

No doubt. I can at least check behind their claims of “needing” something because I do almost all of my own work. Like for example I had to have a Toyota dealer in Atlanta change my oil because I was in school and didn’t have the tools with me away from home. They then brought to my attention that my CV joint was needing replacement and there was a timing chain cover leak... There is a timing chain leak, but its so small that in between oil changes the oil level is negligibly changed and the CV joint as a very slight leak as well.

I will happily tell them thanks for letting me know, but no thanks :) Especially since I just hit 200k miles the other day on it haha

I actually just buy my tires from Tire Rack, especially when they have closeout deals. One of the 2 distribution centers happens to be in Midway, GA which is only 30 min away from me. So I just order off their website and do the pick up option so I don’t have to pay shipping :)

I wonder if you reject their alignment sale, if he doesn’t go back and tell the tech to adjust it out of alignment. So by the next time you visit, your tires are wearing funny and you’ll think, “maybe I should of got it last time”. If you DID agree to the alignment the first time, what if they don’t even perform one? Maybe they just leave your car in the back another hour? Do you think they really put each car on the rack that day to check the alignment before suggesting it? Knowing there’s a 50% chance you’ll say no. Maybe they tore your cv boot themselves?

I guess you could say I have trust issues. It bugs me the service advisor s pay is incentivised to get additional services performed. Every alignment, brake flush, cabin filter he sells boosts his paycheck. Of course he’s going suggest something to everyone.

That all depends on the individual and dealer practices. I haven’t had an experience like that and when I do get work done I can’t/won’t do I have a local guy I know do it, not a dealer.

I will say however that in regards to your example, I’d laugh if they did that because I have a lifetime alignment with Firestone and I’d just take it right over there to get an alignment, but I think you’d be surprised to see how many people don’t bend people over. It happens sure, but probably not as much as you’d think.

$15 is pretty standard for mounting and balancing. I have a feeling that because you already had tires that PepBoys and Firestone charge more for mounting and balancing when you don’t buy the tires from them. Or they could just be screwing people because I’d never pay more than $16 a tire. But then, I don’t even like paying that and haven’t had to since I left America’s Tire. It helps to know people.
